<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for detecting a state of a machine tool for obtaining an object machined with correct dimension while correctly and constantly detecting positions of the machined object and a tool attachment shaft. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The tool attachment shaft 6 is driven in both of normal and reverse directions of an X axis direction in a numerical control automatic machine tool 1, a tool retaining member 7 is driven in both of normal and reverse directions of a Z axis direction, and a movement table 13 is driven in both of normal and reverse directions of a Y axis direction. The tool 8 at the tip end of the tool attachment shaft 6 machines the machined object into the predetermined shape while moving in a three dimension directions of XYZ relatively to the machined object fixed and placed on the movement table 13. The predetermined wave energy is constantly emitted from a wave generator 9 disposed at a lower part of the tool attachment shaft 6, the positional relation between the tool attachment shaft 6 and the machined object are constantly detected by two wave receivers 12a, 12b at an end part of one side (left in the illustration) of the mounting table 3 and four wave receivers 12c, 12d, 12e, 12f provided at long and short four wave receiver mounting arms 14a, 14b, 15a, 15b for machining the machined object with the tool 8.
