PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a skin external preparation excellent in a skin whitening effect. SOLUTION: A ferulic acid sugar ester defends and inhibits melanism due to sunburn and exhibits a strong skin whitening effect by various mechanisms of rendering the skin in a young and fresh state, and moreover the dissolution of the ferulic acid sugar ester in water is far easier than that of ferulic acid and accordingly, broad-ranging dosage forms can be adopted.
