<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a high-quality polyester in high yield from a raw material in a molten state, and to provide an apparatus used for the method. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The apparatus comprises a reaction vessel 50, a means for feeding the reaction vessel 50 with a molten hydroxycarboxylic acid condensate, and a means for feeding the reaction vessel with a polymerization catalyst. In this apparatus, the molten condensate is depolymerized in the reaction vessel 50 into the corresponding cyclic condensate. This apparatus also includes a means for making the molten condensate into a thin-layer form along the inner wall of the reaction vessel 50, and the inner wall is provided with weirs 52 for limiting the molten condensate's flow in the thin-layer form A.
