<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electromagnetic brake for a linear motor which can stop the linear motor, without fail, in a short time, while reducing an impact applied to the linear motor, while when making the linear motor stop in emergency. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The electromagnetic brake for the linear motor includes: a brake pad which is arranged at a movable part of the linear motor and generates friction between a fixing bar and itself, by being pressed by the fixing bar; a pressing means which presses the brake pad to the fixing bar; and a holding means which holds the brake pad separate from the fixing bar, while withstanding the pressing force of the pressing means. The brake pad is constituted of n-pieces (n is two or larger integers) of brake pads which can operate independently of one another, and the pressing means is a multi-stage operation type pressing means which presses the n-pieces of the brake pads to the fixing bar, at prescribed intervals, in the order of the first brake pad to the n-th brake pad after the holding of the brake pad by the holding part is released.
