PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording head for high-frequency field assist recording that minimizes the time required for a reversal of a spin torque oscillator. SOLUTION: The magnetic head includes: a main magnetic pole 22; a magnetic shield 24 forming a magnetic circuit with the main magnetic pole; and a spin torque oscillator 10 provided between the main magnetic pole and the magnetic shield, formed of a stack structure having first and second magnetic layers 10d, 10b and an intermediate layer 10c provided between the first magnetic layer 10d and second magnetic layer 10b, to generate high-frequency magnetic field from the second magnetic layer 10b by supplying a current between the first and second magnetic layers. In the magnetic head, the first magnetic layer 10d is made of a magnetic material with a coercive force of 200 Oe or less, a cross-sectional area of the first magnetic layer in a direction perpendicular to a stack layer face of the first magnetic layer is four or more times greater than a cross-sectional area of the second magnetic layer in a direction perpendicular to a stack layer face of the second magnetic layer.
