<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a piston ring for a reciprocating engine with very simple structure having an improved shape of a piston ring outer peripheral surface, capable of rapidly reaching a prescribed harmonization shape while keeping the oil-keeping characteristic of a sliding outer peripheral surface of a piston ring, and capable of preventing seizure of the piston ring or abnormal abrasion of the sliding outer peripheral surface. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the piston ring for the reciprocating engine equipped with an outer peripheral surface respectively connected to an upper surface and a lower surface and formed in the axial direction of a piston and slidably abutted to a sliding surface of a cylinder liner, a plurality of grooves are provided on the outer peripheral surface along the axial direction of the piston of the outer peripheral surface, and the plurality of the grooves are formed to be a plurality of large grooves having a large dimension of the groove and having a small distance between the grooves in a prescribed length from the upper surface side, and in a part near the lower surface from the prescribed length, they are formed to be small grooves having the dimension of the groove smaller and the distance between the grooves larger than the large groove.
