PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a cyclic sulfurous ester that produces the cyclic sulfurous ester in a high efficiency and selectivity and is advantageous for industrial-scale production without strict time management. SOLUTION: The method for producing a cyclic sulfurous ester represented by general formula (2) characterized by reacting an epoxide represented by general formula (1) and sulfur dioxide in the presence of a silica catalyst subjected to surface modification with a tertiary aminic group or a quaternary ammonium ionic group, and the catalyst used for the method are provided (in the formulas, R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>indicate each independently a hydrogen atom, a 1-10C linear, branched or cyclic alkyl group that may be substituted by a halogen atom or a phenyl group that may be substituted by a halogen atom, or R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>indicate ones that form a 5-10C ring that may have a halogen atom as a substituent together with carbon atoms bonding to R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>).
