<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus suitably applying transfer voltage to a transfer means even if inflow current from an image carrier is found. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes an applying means 66 applying the transfer voltage to the transfer means 30, a detection means 67 detecting a signal on an output side of the applying means and generating a detection signal Si, drive circuits (63A, 63B and 64), and a switching means 65. The drive circuits generate a first drive signal Sd1 that is an on/off signal and a second drive signal Sd2 that is a signal increasing stepwise, and drive the applying means 66 according to the respective drive signals. The switching means 65 switches the first drive signal Sd1 and the second drive signal Sd2 according to the detection signal Si so that the applying means may be driven according to the first drive signal in a start mode in which the applying means is started, and the applying means may be driven according to the second drive signal in a normal mode after starting.
