Feed materials (116) are melted in a first vessel (114) to form a glass melt (118) at a first temperature T, the glass melt containing at least one fining agent. The molten glass is next cooled to a second temperature Tless than Tin a second vessel (120) wherein an oxygen-comprising gas is not actively added (e.g. bubbled) into the melt during the duration of the time the melt is at T. The molten glass is thereafter heated to a third temperature Tgreater than Tin a third vessel (122) and subsequently formed into a glass article (140).
