Organic isocyanates are prepared from the corresponding carbamyl chloride by contacting a solution or a suspension of the carbamyl chloride in an inert water-immiscible organic solvent with an aqueous solution or suspension of an acid acceptor, which include inorganic and organic bases such as sodium hydroxide, separating the liquid non-aqueous phase and recovering the isocyanate therefrom. Organic isocyanates which can be prepared from this method include both mono-isocyanates and polyisocyanates of the aliphatic, cycloaliphatic aromatic and heterocyclic series and also those of the alkaryl or aralkyl series which may be substituted by chlorine. |
