<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper sheet separating mechanism having higher bill correcting capability. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The paper sheet separating mechanism comprises a plurality of delivery rollers 11 each having a high-friction delivery part 11b on part of the outer periphery side and adapted to be rotated in the carrying direction, a plurality of resistance rollers 12 arranged to be nested into the plurality of delivery rollers 11 and adapted to be non-rotatable in the carrying direction, and a plurality of pay-out rollers 13 arranged on the front stage side to be overlapped with the plurality of delivery rollers 11 in the carrying direction. The plurality of pay-out rollers 13 each have a first feeding part 13b for paying out the front end of a paper sheet P to an overlapped part OV, and a second feeding part 13c provided in the same phase with the delivery part 11b of the delivery roller 11 and paying out the paper sheet P to be inserted into the overlapped part OV. Both axially outside pay-out rollers 13 to be located inside both axially outside delivery rollers 11 are arranged so that their axial positions are overlapped with those of the resistance rollers 12.
