A cable winch includes two coaxial cylindrical drum portions 1-2 of different diameters and joined by a step 7 which is substantially perpendicular to the drum axis, the cable 3 being attached to the drum in the region of the step such that the intial turns thereof wind on to the smaller drum part 2.
