The sliding cross-beam (100) has a sliding box spar (110) and an extended sliding cross-beam (120). An optical distance measuring system (5) is provided for detecting a distance between two points of reference (1,2). The former point of reference is assigned to the sliding box spar, and the latter point of reference is assigned to the extended sliding cross-beam. The optical distance measuring system is arranged within the sliding cross-beam. An independent claim is included for a method for operating a sliding cross-beam or controlling device.
