A laser assembly comprises a laser glass rod embedded within a cladding glass which partially surrounds a pump flash tube. A unitary elongated main body structure 14 comprises a laser rod 21 of trivalent neodymium-doped barium crown laser glass, or a ytterbium-neodymium doped glass or an erbium-ytterbium-neodymium doped glass clad by glass 22 which has substantially the same refractive index as the laser glass and is chosen so as to be highly transparent to optical energy at the pumping wavelengths. The cladding glass may be doped so as to have good absorbing characteristics for optical energy at the laser emission wavelength and it also acts to conduct heat away from the laser rod. A concavely curved polished recess is provided along the entire length of the main body structure 14 and a flash tube 16 is fixed therein by a thin layer of epoxy cement, a small amount of liquid being provided between the laser cladding and flash lamp to provide good heat conductivity. A first silver reflecting layer 18 is positioned around the assembly of main body structure and flash lamp to reflect light from the flash lamp on to the laser rod and also to conduct heat away from the cladding. A second heat conducting layer of copper 19 is positioned in intimate contact with the first layer. The assembly may be provided with an outer housing, Fig. 5 (not shown), through which a liquid coolant flows. Although the layers 18, 19 may be coated on the laser assembly they may be provided with flanges which are releasably held together, Fig. 6 (not shown), so as to facilitate removal of the flash lamp. |
