PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve detection accuracy of residual toner more than the conventional one. SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus includes: a rotary body used for image formation; a cleaning means for cleaning the toner attached to the rotary body; and detection means for detecting surface property of a portion which is used at least for image formation in the surface of the rotary body and cleaned by the cleaning means. Furthermore, the image forming apparatus includes: a storing means for storing the surface property of the rotary body which is already cleaned by the cleaning means; and a matching process means for match processing the surface property which is detected this time and the surface property detected in the past which is stored in the storing means.
