<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor laser that can perform a self-pulsation operation, sufficiently decrease coherence of laser light, and stably obtain low-noise laser light. <P>SOLUTION: The semiconductor laser has a laser chip 10 having at least one laser stripe 11, extending in a resonator length direction, between end surfaces 10a and 10b facing each other. The laser stripe 11 has a gain region 14 and a saturable absorption region 15 in the resonator length direction. The width of the laser stripe 11 in the saturable absorption region 15 is made larger than the width of the laser stripe 11 in the gain region 14.
