PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of efficiently and completely removing stain of an image carrier, and its cleaning method. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: an original image reading means for reading an original image; an image carrying means for carrying a toner image corresponding to the original image read by the original image reading means on its surface; a removing means for removing toner and adhesive matter remaining on a surface of the image carrying means by coming into contact with the surface of the image carrying means; and a linear velocity difference changing means for changing a linear velocity difference between the image carrying means and the removing means. The toner and the adhesive matter remaining on the surface of the image carrying means are efficiently and completely removed by the removing means which can be changed to optional rotating speed and rotating direction.
