Preparing methacrylonitrile, comprises: reacting methacrylic acid or methacrylic acid methyl ester with ammonia in a catalytic gas phase reaction at 250-500[deg] C, where alumina is used as a catalyst; treating the reaction mixture with an inert organic solvent, which forms a two-phase mixture with water, where the mixture consists of an aqueous and an organic phase; and separating the reaction product from the organic phase.
