The component (10) has an inflow unit (130) for supplying a combustible gas into a fuel cell in a mounted condition, such that the gas flows along a flow path (42) over a flow field plate (40) of the fuel cell. A catalytic converter (60) has a thickness (61) that is decreased along the flow path, and an oxidation unit (80) is provided for oxidizing inactive substances e.g. carbon monoxide, contained in the gas, where the oxidation unit is arranged in the inflow unit. An independent claim is also included for a fuel cell comprising an electrode element and a membrane unit.
