<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feed unit with size detecting mechanisms on both a side guide and an end guide for accurately discriminating various paper sizes, having improved operability during setting paper. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The paper feed unit includes a pair of side guide members 20, 30, an end guide member 70, a side sensor actuator 50, an end sensor actuator, and a paper size sensor 60 for recognizing a paper size in the condition of contacting a thrust portion 52a. When the pair of side guide members 20, 30 and the end guide member 70 are set to be moved, the thrust portion 52a operates the paper size sensor 60 depending on a stacked paper size. The side sensor actuator 50 has a guide groove 55 which is moved relative to the paper size sensor 60 in one direction in linkage with the size guide members 20, 30.
