<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently obtaining a polylactic acid maintaining optical purity of a raw material and having high molecular weight when the polylactic acid is produced by performing dehydration condensation of the raw material including lactic acid or an oligomer thereof. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the method for producing the polylactic acid by performing dehydration condensation of the raw material including lactic acid or the oligomer thereof, melt polymerization is performed at 130 to 170°C using scandium trifluoromtahnesulfonate as a catalyst and then solid phase polymerization is performed at 100 to 170°C. Thereby, the polylactic acid having a weight average molecular weight of 100,000 or more and ≤1%ee reduction amount of optical purity from the lactic acid or the oligomer thereof of the raw material can be obtained with high yield.
