<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator which can be installed by simple work of construction without breaking existing stairsteps, and does not lie in the way when it is not used. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the elevator installed to a staircase having U-turn stairsteps, a car 10 in which an opening 10a for getting in or getting out is formed to one side face is disposed to the staircase to be approximately vertically movable upward and downward. The car has a bottom face in a shape corresponding to a shape of treads of the stairway, the opening thereof faces an entrance of the stairs at a lowered position, and the bottom face is brought into contact with or gets close to upper faces of the stairsteps.
