<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fixing device and an image forming apparatus which are capable of surely obtaining a high image quality by a simple system. Ž<P>SOLUTION: On the basis of knowledge that a peak of glossiness of a recording material P and that of force with which the recording material P is stuck to a fixing roller 11 by adhesive force of toner coincide with each other, movement while supporting a separating claw 2 so as to vary a position wherein the recording material P is separated from the fixing roller 11 and measurement of force acting upon the separating claw 2 when separating the recording material P from the fixing roller 11 are successively executed, and the separating claw 2 is controlled so as to move to a position corresponding to the highest value of the force acting upon the separating claw 2.
