<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle periphery monitoring device for highly precisely recognizing whether an object is a designated four-legged animal. <P>SOLUTION: The vehicle periphery monitoring device is configured to decide whether a first object region and a second object region are pertinent to a designated four-legged animal according to whether the aspect ratio of the first object region is set to 1 or more, a plurality of second object regions are extracted, and the rate of the height of the second object region to the height of the first object region is within the range of the rate of the height of the leg to the height of the body of a normal designated four-legged animal.
