PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus which is improved in a certain kind of function e.g., improved in starting the auto focus of a camera. SOLUTION: A button (22) on a device capable of detecting when a finger (38) touches or approaches to the button, especially to initiate a particular feature/function of the device is provided. The button includes a proximity detector (34) that is operable to sense or detect when a user's finger is approaching or being in contact with the button. The proximity detector may take many forms. These forms may be combined to provide a higher sensitivity. Additionally, the sensitivity of the proximity detector is set according to threshold values. The sensitivity of the proximity detector correlates to detection or sensing of a user's finger at various distances from the button.
