<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photoreceptor having high sensitivity, excellent potential stability even after repeated printing, preventing image blur even when a large number of sheets are printed in a high temperature and high humidity printing environment, preventing fog or decrease in the image density even when a large number of sheets are printed in a low temperature and low humidity printing environment, and giving a high-quality printed image, and to provide an image forming apparatus using the photoreceptor. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The electrophotographic photoreceptor has a photosensitive layer and a protective layer disposed in this order on a substrate, wherein the protective layer has a hardness of 0.3 to 7.0 GPa measured by a nano-indentation method, and the photosensitive layer contains a compound expressed by general formula (2), wherein X3 and X4 may be omitted.
