[Also in Division A4] A system for identifying the proper user of a card 7 reads a first number from the card and has manual means 3 for the user to enter a secret second number, a predetermined operation being performed in dependence upon the two numbers, and the result being compared 26 with a predetermined number to produce an output signal when the result indicates that the first and second numbers correspond. The output signal may deliver an article from a vending machine, the card being a credit card. The card number and secret number are of the forms " abc " and " defg " respectively, where each letter is a decimal digit. Digit " c " is decoded in a matrix 10 to enable one of gates 17, 18 and one of gates 22, 23 so that adder 21 and complementers 19, 24 evaluate " de " + " fg," " de " - " fg " or " fg " - " de," according to the value of " c," the result (the two lowestorder digits of the adder output) being compared at 26 with " ab " from the card to produce the output signal on equality. The uses of the card and secret numbers above could be interchanged. Multiplication or division, e.g. by digit " c," could be employed instead of addition, subtraction. The matrix 10 may select a number to be used in the comparison, in place of " ab." |
