Carbon dioxide and/or hydrogen sulphide are separated from gases by scrubbing the gases with an N-(omega-methoxy)-alkylpyrrolidone, under pressure and degassing the solvent by complete or partial release of pressure. The alkyl radical of the organic solvent has one to six carbon atoms and is preferably N-methoxy methylpyrrolidone. Pressures may be in the range 5-200 atmospheres, with preferred range of 15-80 atmospheres.
