Stones &c. are prevented from being flung from rotating mowing members 33 by means of a pivoted depending plate 48 behind the members 33. The plate 48 is loaded by torsion bars 49A (or torsion springs or counterweights) so that only a small force is required to tilt the plate rearwardly and upwardly. The plate 48 may hang vertically with its lower edge 49 touching the ground. Each mowing member 33 comprises a cylindrical or hexagonal drum 28 carrying blades 31 pivoted thereto by the inner ends of their leading edges. The drums 28 are rotated in opposite directions (to produce a central swath) by a shaft 37 driven via bevel gearing by a pulley 52A driven by a further pulley on a shaft connected to a universally jointed telescopic shaft driven by the tractor power-take-off. The mowing assembly may be pivoted upwardly about a shaft 51 carried by a frame 52 connected to the tractor three-point hitch, and held in an inoperative position by a hooked rod (on the plate 39) engaging a bracket on the frame 52. Each mowing drum 28 carries a ground-engaging support 34 and the mowing assembly is supported by groundengaging supports 42 and 43 carrying posts 44 which extend through sleeves 45 oh the plate 39. The posts 44 may be secured in selected positions by pins 47, or raised and lowered by a crank operating a screw-andnut arrangement. The supports 42 and 43 are closed by plates which laterally screen the mowing members 33. |
