<p>An automotive diesel engine (10) is operated in alternate rich and lean fuel burn cycles and discharging gases through an exhaust gas system (10, 12). During rich burn, ammonia is synthesized and stored in the exhaust system. During lean burn, the ammonia is progressively released, reducing nitric oxides to nitrogen. The motor has a three-phase fuel injection cycle. First and second-phase combustion takes place under conditions of excess oxygen to provide enough surplus oxygen for the synthesis of NOx to produce ammonia. The adjustment of the rich/lean burn is effected by the third-phase injection. An Independent claim is included for a commensurate piston engine and exhaust system.</p> |
