<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas diffusion layer as well as a membrane-electrode assembly capable of achieving a light-weight and compact fuel cell which can store moisture produced in a positive electrode to keep a solid polymer membrane wet, and do away with need of supply of humidified gas, or if not, suffice to have a compact humidifier, and to provide a fuel cell that can be light-weight and compact. <P>SOLUTION: The gas diffusion layer has just one peak in a log differential pore volume distribution graph measured by a mercury press-fitting method, with the peak existing within a range of a pore diameter of 0.01 to 1 μm. The membrane-electrode assembly is provided with the gas diffusion layer.
