PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of processing a glass preform, by which flaw or foreign matter present on the surface of the glass preform is removed to prevent intrusion into the inside of the glass preform. SOLUTION: In the method of processing the glass preform 1 by heating and processing the glass preform 1 while holding the glass preform held by a rotary chuck and rotating it and moving a heating source 2 in the longitudinal direction of the glass preform 1, the glass preform 1 is heated and processed after the surface of the glass preform 1 is chemically etched to be dissolved and eroded byΔψ0.02-0.3 mm.
