<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine whether a parking space is vacant or not. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An apparatus to be mounted on a vehicle and for determining whether or not a parking space for making the vehicle to parked therein is vacant comprises an imaging means (10) for imaging an image around the vehicle, a means (23) for recognizing a boundary line of the parking space from the imaged image, a means (25) for recognizing a number plate of the parked vehicle from the imaged image, and a determining means (27) for determining whether or not the parking space having the boundary line is vacant based on the determination whether the number plate is recognized after the boundary line is recognized.
