<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a telephone with an answering function capable of preventing an absence operation mode from being set to an answer only mode contrary to intention of a user. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The telephone has the answering function, and has a recording mode for recording an incoming message after output of an answer message, and the answer only mode for only outputting the answer message, as the absence operation mode. An original message recording means preliminarily records an original message which is not recorded in a memory part. A holding means is a memory which holds the recorded message. An output means outputs the original message. An absence operation mode setting means sets the absence operation mode based on input from the user. Here, the absence operation mode setting means sets the absence operation mode to the answer only mode only when the original message recorded by the original message recording means is held in the holding means, and set as the answer message.
