The device (ES) has a developing roller (4) e.g. jump roller, arranged adjacent to a charge image carrier (5). A potential element (15) is arranged before a developing region (6) in a movement direction of the roller such that alternating voltage is produced between the potential element and the roller, and a toner cloud of toner particles is formed between the potential element and the roller. An electric field is produced by the alternating voltage at an end of the potential element, where the end is turned towards the developing region. An independent claim is also included for a method for developing charge images by an electrophotographic printing device using toner-jump-development.
