PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus which can perform intensity detection and position detection of a laser beam, and is little in the number of parts. SOLUTION: The detection surface 310 of a photodetector 117 is divided to a region C, region E region F region G, region H. The photodetector 117 outputs the detection signal complying with the light quantity incident on each region. A position detection controller 130a calculates the image projection position based on the timing at the laser beam is incident on the region C. A laser control circuit 120 adjusts the intensity of the laser light emitted by the laser based on the laser light intensity detected in the regions E to G disposed on the periphery of the region C.
