<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rack and pinion type steering device which suppresses generation of rattling sound by employing a one-way clutch mechanism for a rack shaft and suppressing an inverse input from a road surface side by restricting the axial movement of the rack shaft through the clutch mechanism. <P>SOLUTION: A clutch unit 11 is provided on the rack shaft 7 to restrict the axial movement of the rack shaft 7. When the system is normal, a steering force is detected and the clutch unit 11 is released only in the direction required for moving the rack shaft 7 to allow the steering. Therefore, even if an impulsive force is acted in the reverse direction from the wheel side, it is not transmitted to the engagement part of the gears of the steering device and the rattling sound is not generated. When the power is cut off or the system is defective, the clutch unit 11 is automatically released by a spring 16, and therefore the steering is allowed even when the power is cut off or the system is defective.
