PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance, by mesylating a diol, subjecting to pinacol rearrangement, stereo-selective reduction and reductive desilylation, reacting with phenoxy acetate, oxidizing with dicyclohexylborane, and treating with a base and an acid. CONSTITUTION:The diol of formula I (R' and R' are hydrocarbon residue) is mesylated, and is subjected to pinacol rearrangement to obtain alpha-alkenyl ketone of formula II, which is stereo-selectively reduced and then desilylated to form the threo-compound of formula III. The compound is made to react with phenoxy acetate to convert the OH group to OCOCH2OC6H5 group, and then oxidized with dicyclohexylborane to form the compound of formula IV, which is converted to the objective (+)- or (-)-eldanolide of formula V by the base and acid treatment. EFFECT:The objective compound can be produced in high yield. USE:Agricultural chemicals.
