Carbon cathodes employed in fusion salt electrolyses are given a greatly increased service life by providing them with a protective layer made up from impervious graphite plates which are cemented to those parts of their surface which are in contact with the charge. This is particularly beneficial in the joint areas where the melt may seep between carbon blocks, which make up the flat electrodes which cover the cell floor. In the preferred version the sheets are laid to as to overlap each other or alternatively two layers of sheeting are applied offset relative to each other. The sheets should be 2-5 cm thick.
