A stringer for a fastener comprises a plurality of longitudinally spaced engaging elements 34 of plastics material, each extending transversely of the length of the stringer and having at least one interengaging projection 58, 60 at an upper end and having a lower end that rests adjacent to the material surface, the elements being interconnected by a strip of plastics material 36 reinforced by textile threads. In each engaging element 34 two upright portions 44, 46 having interengaging projections 58, 60 are separated by a base portion 38 in which there is a central hole 62 adjacent which the upper surface of the base portion 38 is chamfered to guide the sewing machine needle during the process of sewing stringer 20 to the edge of material 24 by the thread 22. The textile reinforcing threads between the elements 34 may be either a plurality of longitudinally extending textile threads or an open woven tape 36, with perforations 37 provided to increase the flexibility. Recesses in the outer edges of the upright portions 44, 46 serve as guides for the slider 32 which can be locked by means of spring biased pins 80 (not shown) which are connected to the lever pull and engage complementary indentations 54 or 56 (not shown) provided in the recesses 50, 52. In a further embodiment each upright engaging element portion is provided with a hook projection which engages with similar hooks of a complementary stringer in a fastener, the two rows of engaging elements of each stringer being interconnected by a single reinforced plastics strip. The hooks are contoured such that they will snap together thereby obviating the need for a slider, in which case locking can be accomplished by providing smaller spacing between several engaging elements at one end of the fastener. |
