<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface coating member with high resistance to fracture and abrasion. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The surface coating member of a cutware 1 or the like comprises a thermet substrate 4 having a rigid phase 2 bonded via a binder phase 3 and a coating layer 5 for coating its surface. The rigid phase 2 comprises a first rigid phase 2a and a second rigid phase 2b. As for the surface of the thermet substrate 4, an average particle diameter a<SB>s</SB>of the first rigid phase 2a and an average particle diameter b<SB>s</SB>of the second rigid phase 2b are designed such that their ratio (b<SB>s</SB>/a<SB>s</SB>) ranges 2-10. An average area A<SB>s</SB>occupied by the first rigid phase 2a and an average area B<SB>s</SB>occupied by the second rigid phase 2b for the entire rigid phase 2 on the surface are designed such that their ratio (B<SB>s</SB>/A<SB>s</SB>) ranges 2-10. The coating layer 5 is as thick as 3.5-10 μm. The member has a composition of Ti<SB>1-a-b-c-d</SB>Al<SB>a</SB>W<SB>b</SB>Si<SB>c</SB>M<SB>d</SB>(C<SB>x</SB>N<SB>1-x</SB>) (where M refers to at least one kind selected among Nb, Mo, Ta, Hf and Y, and the following relations are satisfied: 0.45≤a≤0.55, 0.01≤b≤0.1, 0.01≤c≤0.05, 0≤d≤0.1, and 0≤x≤1).
