The method involves detecting preparation-specific information e.g. temperature value in a catalytic converter, in a preparation operation e.g. baking operation or roasting operation, in a household appliance, where the preparation operation is different from a pyrolysis operation of the appliance. The duration of a combustion process of the pyrolysis operation is determined based on the information, and a heater of a preparation area is operated with a maximum power consumption when the temperature value in the converter lies above a reference-temperature.
