<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus and method that embeds information in an image having been already subjected to gradation processing and even an image having been subjected to gradation processing smaller in tone number. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image processing apparatus includes a gradation processing means (105) of performing gradation processing on an image, a signal generating means (101) of generating a data signal representing information different from the image, and an information embedding means (102, 106) of embedding the different information in the image by adding a striped pattern having a plurality of frequency components corresponding to the data signal to the image signal after the gradation processing.
