PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the face of a subject in the entire range of a focusing distance from a proximal end to infinity even if the depth of a field is shallow, and to shorten a time taken to detect the face. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus includes: an imaging means for picking up a subject via a photographic lens; a target image detecting means for detecting a specific target image from a photographic image picked up by the imaging means; and a focus control means for moving the focused position of the photographic lens by a predetermined amount according to the result of the detection of the target image by the target image detecting means. The target image detecting means detects a target image again in the focusing position of the photographic lens moved by the predetermined amount by the focus control means.
