A synthetic ribbon yarn is delustred by heating to softened and pliable condition and treating under tension so that the two sides of the yarn successively contact striating media. As shown, preheated yarn 1 is fed under constant tension by driven feed roll 2, passes between heaters 3 which maintain a uniform yarn temperature, e.g. 240-300‹F, under and then over stationary or moving, e.g. rotating or contrarotating cylindrical, abrasive surfaces 4 and 5 so that relative movement occurs between yarn sides and these surfaces, and is forwarded by feed roll 6. Tension, e.g. 2000-8000 p.s.i., in and stretching, e.g. 1.01-1.10 times, of yarn is ensured by a speed differential between rollers 2 and 6. The yarn material may be a polyamide, polyester, polypropylene or polyethylene.
