PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound being a specific optically active quinazoline derivative and useful for liquid crystal display elements as a component of an antiferroelectric having a low melting point and a low temperature range exhibiting an antiferroelectric phase and low threshold voltage and capable of driving at low voltage. SOLUTION: This new optically active quinazoline derivative is represented by formula I [(m) is an integer of 6-14; (n) is an integer of 2-10; X is O, COO or a single bond; * is an asymmetric carbon]). The derivative is useful for liquid crystal display elements, etc., as a component of antiferroelectric liquid crystal composition having a low melting point, not higher in temperature range exhibiting antiferroelectric phase, having low threshold voltage and capable of driving at low voltage. The compound is obtained by dissolving 2-(4-octyloxyphenyl)-6-cyanoquinazoline of formula II in a solvent comprising ethanol and toluene, blowing chlorine gas thereto and refluxing the solvent for 10hr, reacting the compound with chlorine gas to convert cyano group to ethyl ester group, hydrolyzing the ethyl ester group to afford a chloride and reacting the chloride with (R)-2-octanol, etc. |
