PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of simply controlling charging an alkaline storage battery, and a battery charger for executing the method. SOLUTION: The charging method includes (i) a first step of charging the alkaline storage battery with an average current I1 till the battery voltage Vn<SB>1</SB>of the alkaline storage battery reaches a predetermined voltage V1 by repeating applying and stopping a predetermined charging current I, and (ii) a second step of charging the alkaline storage battery by repeating applying and stopping a charging voltage having the voltage V1 as an upper limit value. In the first and second steps, the battery voltage Vn<SB>2</SB>of the alkaline storage battery is measured when the charging current and the charging voltage are not applied to the alkaline storage battery.
