The x-ray device (1) has an x-ray tube (2) and a detector (3) for detection of x-ray radiation. An attached controlling unit (9) is provided with the detector and an actuator (5) for an adjustment of the detector relative to the x-ray tube. The controlling unit is formed for controlling the position of the detector relative to the x-ray source using a reference image (RB) indicating the reference structure (6) by known local relation between x-ray tube and the detector. An independent claim is included for a method for operating an x-ray device.
