<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent dispersion from being generated in image density during reading time, in an image reader which removes foreign objects attached to a reading glass surface with a cleaning member, even if there is dispersion in the attachment position of the cleaning member and a reading position. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The cleaning member 3 is provided free rotatable, at a position separated from the surface of the document passing side of the reading glass surface, while facing it. There are provided on the cleaning member 3 its body part 31, an elastic brush part 32 and a white plane part 33. The normal state where the white plane part 33 is stationary and separated from the reading glass surface, while facing it, and the cleaning state that the brush part 32 which comes into contact with the reading glass surface by rotating thereof are set switchable.
