The calender has a band (8) rotating over a guiding unit (5). The band forms a contact zone (11.1) with a peripheral section of an impression roller (3). A pressure transducer (15.1) presses a pressure roller (4) against the band, so that a peak pressure acting on a fibrous material web (10) is produced within a region of the contact zone. The pressure transducer or another pressure transducer (15.2) is provided in a position to produce another peak pressure (19), acting on the fibrous material web, over the pressure roller in another contact zone (11.2) at another impression roller.
